When she presented her last BBC news bulletin two years ago, she looked remarkably similar to the elegant brunette who first graced our screens some 30 years ago.

But it was a different Anna Ford who arrived at the Chelsea Flower Show this week.

Not a hint of a tint: Anna Ford as a brunette on her last BBC bulletin in 2006

The 64-year-old broadcaster has allowed her dark locks to return to their natural grey colour.

She recently told Saga magazine: 'Going grey is liberation. I stopped dyeing my hair when I left the BBC.

"It saves a lot of money and all those hours sitting under the drier with bits of silver paper on my head.'

Miss Ford came to prominence in 1978 as ITN's first female newsreader.

She joined the BBC in 1986 but retired in April 2006, saying that she would have faced being forced out because of ageism at the corporation.
