A frail-looking Paul Gascoigne was seen staggering round London in the early hours of this morning

On a night when every football fan was either dancing with joy or commiserating, one fallen star of the game's history cut a sad and forlorn figure.

A frail-looking Paul Gascoigne was seen staggering round London in the early hours of the morning, his recent  troubles etched on his face.

It was an erratic night of activity for the ex-England footballer, who is thought to be receiving treatment for alcoholism and manic depression.

Gascoigne spent the first part of his evening in the exclusive 'Wellington' Members Club in the capital's Knightsbridge area before heading back to his hotel.

He emerged 15 minutes later to make a short trip to The Grosvenor Connoisseur Casino.

After a spell in the casino, Gascoigne staggered into a nearby convenient store where he bizarrely tried to swap a £10,000 cheque made out to himself for cash and food as his cash card had apparently been "stolen".

The shop keeper refused his strange request and the fallen sports legend left with a small French bread stick.

The 40-year-old has recently been spending time in the Priory after trying to commit suicide in a hotel.

He was admitted to the "celebrity" rehab clinic after being led away from the four-star Millennium Hotel in Knightsbridge by eight police officers earlier this month.

They apparently found him trying to drown himself in the bath of his £232-a-night room.

Just three months ago, Gascoigne was released from a psychiatric hospital after being detained for two weeks under the Mental Health Act.

It followed an incident at the Malmaison Hotel in Newcastle hours earlier, where the hotel said the star made other guests and staff feel "threatened".

Gascoigne, who won 57 caps for England, was regarded as one of England's most talented footballers. He had spells at Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers.
