Updated 11:36am on 26 May 2008

Billie Piper is set to return to Dr Who in a dramatic explosion scene that will have viewers on the edge of their seats.

A preview of an episode from the current series shows Billie, who played the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler, in the first two series emerge from fire and debris holding a deadly-looking weapon.

The storyline behind her return has yet to be revealed but as a firm favourite, fans are sure to welcome back the actress for the planned three episodes.

The 25-year-old played the part alongside Christopher Eccleston in the show's initial revival and remained in the cast until 2006 with David Tennant playing the eponymous character.

Since her departure, Freema Agyeman has taken on the role along with comedienne Catherine Tate who joined the BBC1 programme earlier this year.

According to creator Russell T. Davies in Doctor Who magazine, Billie's return has been planned since her departure.

The character was transported to parallel universe and how she returns to earth is still a mystery.
