As a Hollywood film star, one expects her to own an outfit for every occasion.
But when it comes to sensible beachwear, there is clearly a space in Kate Beckinsale wardrobe.
The British actress spent the day soaking up the sunshine in Malibu with her nine-year-old daughter Lily on Monday.

But while her white, lace dress perfectly managed to combine style with practicality, her choice of footwear was not as well thought out.
Donning a pair of towering five-inch wedge sandals, the star tottered gingerly along the sand looking ready to topple at any moment.
Shunning the example of fellow beach-goers who were mostly barefoot, it was clearly more important for Miss Beckinsale to boost her 5ft 7in frame.

And her decision to go for high-heels looked even more ill-advised as she battled to keep up with an energetic nine-year-old.
The 34-year-old was among a host of celebrity guests attending a lavish beach party held by singer Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin Rossdales.
