WHITE LIES

Dark delight: Harry McVeigh of White Lies

WHO ARE THEY?

West London guitar trio set to follow in the epic footsteps of Editors, Keane and Snow Patrol.

WHY THE FUSS?

The band's theatrical debut single, Unfinished Business, was greeted by rave reviews when it was released on the independent Chess Club label last month. Their first London show, in February, attracted a swarm of talent scouts and led to a major label deal with Fiction.

WHAT DO THEY SOUND LIKE?

The galloping drums, electronic pulses and cranked-up guitars of Unfinished Business have seen the band, all aged 19 or 20, compared to Echo & The Bunny men and Joy Division, although the poppier leanings of Tears For Fears and Ultravox are in the mix, too. With Anton Corbijn's recent Ian Curtis biopic, Control, turning younger fans on to the music of the early Eighties, rock could be on the verge of a new gloom boom.

WHAT'S THE STORY?

Formed by singer and guitarist Harry McVeigh, bassist Charles Cave and drummer Jack Brown, White Lies began life as indie pop act Fear Of Flying, and built a cult following. They released two promising but unexceptional singles, Route master and Three's A Crowd.

WHAT NEXT?

As their songs became more melancholy, the band changed its name to White Lies and replaced their colourful stage clothes with darker outfits and songs about 'blood on your hands'. Their tunes, however, revealed an epic grandeur that could one day see them playing the biggest arenas.

WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?

White Lies are active on this summer's festival circuit, playing T In The Park, Latitude, Lovebox and Field Day before heading off on a UK headline tour in the autumn. For details, visit www.myspace.com/whitelies.
