Jerry Hall auctions off dress she wore to wed Mick and says: 'I hope the next person to wear it has more luck than me'

For most women a wedding dress is something to cherish forever.

But then most women weren't married to Mick Jagger.

His ex-wife Jerry Hall said today she was ready to "move on" from the dress she wore for their Hindu wedding - and perhaps from some unhappy memories of their turbulent, 23-year relationship.

The lace wedding dress is one of 60 designer outfits from that period which the 51-year-old has put up for auction, something she said she found "cathartic".

"I did need to let go of it and move on," the former model said, adding: "It feels very cathartic.

"I just hope the next person to wear it has better luck with it than I did."

The Texan-born model wore the Anthony Price white lace dress for her Hindu wedding ceremony with the Rolling Stones frontman in Bali in 1990.

She could be forgiven for harbouring bad memories of the day, as she only discovered in 1999, when the couple broke up, that the ceremony was not legally binding in the UK.

But she insisted the dress was "an old friend" - perhaps like 64-year-old Sir Mick himself. The couple remain in touch and have four children together, Elizabeth, 24, James, 22, Georgia, 16, and ten-year-old Gabriel.

Georgia has followed in her mother and older sister's footsteps and has just begun modelling, and will join her famous mother at the auction at Sotheby's in Olympia, West London, tomorrow.

Hall said her oldest daughters had taken their pick of her designer outfits before she donated them to auction for the homelessness charity Emmaus.

Having a major clear-out: The Texan-born model, 51, is selling around 60 pieces

She said: "We each need a room of our own for clothes. I'm a clothes and shoes fanatic, a horrible hoarder, and I have lots more in my wardrobe - things that actually fit me.

"My daughter Georgia is coming with me to the sale and she actually wants me to bid on some of them, but I had to tell her I'm not going to buy back my own clothes.

"She and Elizabeth had their pick of what they wanted, but they don't like me wearing these any more - they just don't like me wearing mini-skirts when they're wearing them, so I'm behaving myself, sadly."

Hall, who is currently single and finishing her £1million autobiography, due to be published this autumn, hopes today's sale will raise £20,000 for the Emmaus charity.

The wedding dress is expected to fetch about £400 when it goes under the hammer, and estimates for the other designer outfits range from £100 for a Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress to £1,000 for a Vivienne Westwood balldress.

Auctioneer Kerry Thomas said the sale could spark calls from other celebrities seeking to publicly rid themselves of unwanted clothing and even wedding dresses.

She said: "Forget chopping off the arms and legs and a partner's suits, this could really take off for women who have wedding dresses stuffed in the back of a wardrobe.

"The estimates are quite modest so anyone can have a bid. We have had people calling from museums and collections but also just women who want a gorgeous dress to wear, and even a man who drove up from South Wales because he wanted to buy a Jerry Hall dress for his wife.

"She is a style icon who is still turning heads, and these outfits encapsulate a really sexy moment in fashion."
