Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman doing well after safely giving birth to son Rudy

Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman has safely given birth to a baby boy, it was announced today.

Earlier this year Bowman said giving birth could put her life at risk due to a serious heart defect.

But the BBC said that mother and baby - Rudy Brae Bowman Smith, her first child with partner and Editors lead singer, Tom Smith, are both doing well.

Edith's son Rudy was born today at the Portland Hospital in London weighing 6lb 9oz.
His mother said he has 'very long legs'.

Bowman, 33, has a bicuspid aortic valve, a condition which puts extra pressure on the heart. As a result she required a planned Caesarean.

The DJ, who presents the afternoon show on Radio 1, is.originally from Anstruther in Fife.

She started out on MTV and hosted Top Of The Pops before its demise.

Andy Parfitt, controller of Radio 1, said: 'Everyone at Radio 1 sends their love and best wishes to Edith and Tom.'
