Comeback Kids (On The Block): New Kids hang tough again after 14 years

Updated 19:33pm on 16 Jun 2008

Fourteen years after they split up, New Kid On The Block made a long-awaited return to the stage at a Canadian awards show last night.

The boy band, who ruled the charts in the late 1980s and early 1990s, performed a medley of their biggest hits as they took to the stage at the MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto.

Surrounded by screaming fans - who are now in their twenties and thirties - the reunited group sang their biggest tracks Step By Step, You Got It (The Right Stuff), Hangin' Tough and Please Don't Go Girl, as well as their new single Summertime.

Reunited: L-R Jonathan Knight, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Jordan Knight arrive at the MuchMusic Awards in Canada

Donnie Wahlberg, older brother of actor Mark Wahlberg, admitted he was amused to see their fans all grown up.

He said: 'It's evolved into a respectful healthy mature adult sort of screaming.

'It's kind of a chance for them to just let their hair down and kind of be kids again, be free again. While we have a lot of work to do and a lot of responsibility putting this together, I think it's a chance for us to do that as well.

'I don't think we're having mid-life crises or anything but you know, we're having fun and we're getting to do something we haven't done in a long time and I think it's the same for the fans.'

At the height of the group's fame, the bandmembers were teenagers and in their early twenties.

While the group's wardrobe has evidently matured to suits, Donnie is still wearing his trademark baseball cap, while his bandmate all donned the same Adidas pump trainers they wore in their 1990s heyday.

Now, 14 years after going their separate ways, the middle-aged quintet are in remarkably good shape, but are married or divorced with children.

Back from the block: The reunited group revive their old dance moves from their first UK number one You Got It (The Right Stuff)

Jordan Knight, 38, has two sons with his wife Evelyn; Donnie, 38, has two sons with ex-wife Kim Fey; Danny Wood, 39, has three children with ex-wife Patricia Alfaro; and Joey McIntyre, 35, has a son with his wife Barrett.

The group's eldest member Jonathan Knight, 39, is the only member who has never married or become a father.

NKOTB's reunion follows a string of recent pop groups from the eighties and nineties returning to the stage, including their successors Take That, Boyzone and the Spice Girls.

The group, who hail from Boston in the U.S., formed in 1984, but didn't hit the big time until their second album Hangin' Tough in 1988.

After their debut UK single You Got It (The Right Stuff) reached number one in November 1989, they went on to enjoy nine top 10 hits.

Their popularity began to wane in 1992, and despite a critically-acclaimed fifth album Face The Music in 1994, the group failed to match the worldwide success of earlier albums.

Still Hangin' Tough: Jonathan and Jordan Knight and Donnie Wahlberg rile up the crowd as they perform their 1989 number one Hangin' Tough

When eldest member Jonathan decide to leave the band in 1994, the remaining members decided to disband.

While Jonathan started a career in real estate, the rest of his bandmates remained in the entertainment industry.

Jordan and Joey both enjoy moderate success with their solo careers, while Danny moved into producing.

Jordan achieved a top 10 hit with his solo single Give It To You and also appeared on reality shows The Surreal Life, Trust Me I'm A Holiday Rep and Totally Boyband.

Joey's first of three solo albums, Stay The Same, went platinum in the U.S. and he has also enjoyed a successful acting career on Broadway and in the TV drama Boston Public.

Last year, he came third in the U.S. talent show Dancing With The Stars.

After landing a role in blockbuster The Sixth Sense and the Saw horror film series, Donnie landed a leading role in critically-acclaimed U.S. cop show Boomtown.

The reunited group are embarking on a North America tour in September, leaving British fans waiting in anticipation for the group to add some UK dates.
