EastEnders hard man Phil Mitchell will soon be sporting a new accessory - a splint.

Scriptwriters have had to write an accident into the storyline after actor Steve McFadden, who plays the character, fell down the stairs on set.

McFadden, 49,  was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, where it was found he had a shattered hand.

He was given 30 stitches and had pins put in his bones.

After missing two days of filming,  McFadden returned to the set with his arm in a splint.

Last night the actor said: 'I'm feeling much better.'

Health and Safety officials have been to visit the set in Elstree, Hertfordshire.

A friend told the Sun newspaper: 'Steve had an accident on set, but he's not blaming the bosses.

'He had an operation and was back two days later.

'He's a proper geezer and just wants to get stuck into work.'
