Not Happening: Mark Wahlberg's 'unexplained suicide' film banned in Bridgend

Updated 21:10pm on 19 Jun 2008

A thriller depicting a spate of unexplained suicides has been banned from a cinema in a county already plagued by a series of tragic hangings.

Cinema bosses at the Odeon in Bridgend, south Wales, have confirmed that The Happening will not be screened at the out-of-town complex.

The news comes after Carwyn Jones, 28, from Bettws, near Bridgend, was found hanged on Monday.

His death brings the total of young people from the county who are believed to have taken their own lives to 22 since January last year.

The Odeon cinema is located at the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet alongside the M4 outside the town of Bridgend.

The move to ban The Happening from its screens was taken by cinema bosses after discussions with the police.

The film stars Mark Wahlberg and is the latest offering from cult director M Night Shyamalan whose other projects include The Sixth Sense.

The Happening tells the story of an airborne toxin which sweeps through a series of American cities inducing violent suicide, including hangings.

As a result there is a constant stream of self-inflicted violent deaths throughout the film, many graphically depicted.

A spokesman for the Odeon cinema group said: "Odeon took the decision in May not to screen The Happening at Odeon Bridgend due to sensitivities around the content of the film in this particular region.

"The decision was made following discussions with local police press officers, who confirmed that the subject matter would be deemed as inappropriate."
