Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen may have splashed out a huge £5million on their wedding – but I can reveal they did not invest in a pre-nuptial agreement.

The couple decided against the legal arrangement because they didn’t want to be ‘unromantic’.

The childhood sweethearts, both 22, who have been dating since they were at school, dismissed the idea out of hand, according to family friends.

Childhood sweethearts: Newlyweds Coleen and Wayne thought a pre-nuptial agreement would be unromantic

‘We asked Wayne if he was going to arrange to have something in place to protect his fortune but he said it was not something he and Coleen had talked about,’ says a chum.

‘Coleen was also against the idea and said she thought it was terribly unromantic and neither of them wanted their day to be overshadowed by a legal document that would determine what would happen if they split up.’

Coleen earns millions of pounds in her own right but considerably less than Manchester United star Wayne, who can expect about £100million in income over his playing career.

Now she would potentially be entitled to half of his vast salary and a share of his earnings should the marriage break down.

‘Wayne and Coleen have had their problems along the way but they married because they love each other and it’s as simple as that,’ added the friend.

‘Wayne thinks he’s the luckiest boy in the world to be with Coleen.

In love: Friends say old-fashioned Wayne believes what is his is now Coleen's

‘It never occurred to him that he should think about protecting his assets.

'He’s quite old-fashioned about things and thinks what’s his is now hers.’

Coleen, who changed her wedding vows and promised to ‘cherish’ rather than ‘obey’, decided a pre-nup was out of the question for several reasons, according to the source.

‘It’s not her style and, besides, she makes her own money.

'She has millions coming in from her book deal, Coke sponsorship and her magazine column,’ the friend added.

‘She trusts Wayne and, although he has strayed in the past, she believes that he will always be faithful to her now they are man and wife.’
