Footballer Sol Campbell's buff athletic physique once turned heads off of the football pitch.

But now it seems he is succumbing to a mid-life weight gain crisis as he showed off his expanding girth and love handles on the beach in the French West Indies.

Sol is holidaying with his posh interior designer girlfriend Fiona Barratt, 27, and can be seen generously rubbing sun oil on her skin.

But as he bends down to make sure it's fully absorbed, he reveals a generous helping of back fat.

Sol's out of shape look is at odds with the finely honed figure that graced many a football pitch in his Premier League and England heyday.

Maybe the Portsmouth defender is enjoying his holiday just a little too much.

Sol is enjoying a break with interior designer Fiona the granddaughter of homes tycoon Sir Lawrence Barratt.

She recently sparked a war of the WAGs as she described Victoria Beckham as a 'prima donna' and described attending the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

She told The Sun: “I sat and watched the whole charade. Victoria Beckham . . . what a nightmare. She’s such a prima donna.

'The nonentity WAGs had to walk out first. The higher the profile, the later they were.'

Three years ago, Portsmouth defender Campbell, 33, famously walked out on Arsenal halfway through a home defeat against West Ham.

He has since joined Portsmouth but insists his motives for moving to Fratton Park were sound. He said: “You want to keep pushing yourself and see just how far you can go.

'Some people will say that's unrealistic but a few years ago Pompey weren't even a club on my radar and look how far we've come. It's worked out well for me.'
