Glowing Amy Winehouse takes to the stage at Mandela's birthday concert in London

Updated 21:10pm on 28 Jun 2008

A glowing Amy Winehouse bounced back from her recent health problems to sing at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park last night.

The 24-year-old singer belted out renditions of her hit songs Valerie and Rehab in front of the 46,664-strong crowd, before returning to the stage at the climax of the gig for a rendition of The Special AKA's hit Free Nelson Mandela with Jerry Dammers and the Soweto Gospel Choir.

Winehouse paid tribute to jailed husband Blake by changing the words to add in 'Free Blakey my fella'.

Teaming her signature beehive and heavy black eyeliner with a cream and black mini-dress, Winehouse looking remarkably tanned and healthy compared to her pale demeanour a few days ago.

Today Amy  returned to the private London clinic, where she has been having treatment for the first stages of lung disease.

At first she was happy to sign autographs for fans before turning and storming inside in a sudden change of mood.

Star turn: Amy put the past week behind her for a show-stealing set

Winehouse left the private  hospital on Monday after being diagnosed with early signs of emphysema following a fainting incident last week.

Organisers of Friday's gig feared Winehouse would miss the concert after she failed to attend a scheduled photocall on Thursday.

After a nervous start, a straight-faced Winehouse fidgeted with her skirt through her performance, but impressed the crowd with her powerful vocals.

Following her performance, presenter June Sarpong said: 'She was looking really healthy and really brown too, huh?

'She looked fantastic. She pulled it out of the bag for Nelson's birthday, didn't she.'

Hollywood star Will Smith and his actress wife Jada Pinkett Smith kicked off the proceedings earlier in the evening, shouting; 'Ladies and gentlemen, the party begins now.'

As well as marking the former South African president's 10th decade alive, the event also aimed to raise money for his 46664 AIDS charity - named after the prison number he was given during his 27-year incarceration in Robben Island.

Razorlight was the first act to perform, with frontman Johnny Borrell taking time out of singing to condemn Robert Mugabe's actions in Zimbabwe.

One of the earlier acts of the night was X Factor winner Leona Lewis, who took to the stage in a colourful, strapless dress and starry high-heels, singing her new single Better In Time.

She personally wished Mandela a happy birthday and said her grandmother had taught her all about the great man and his work.

She said: 'When I was younger, I remember my aunty and grandmother used to tell me stories about this incredible, wonderful, great man, Nelson Mandela.

'We used to sing songs about him. It's incredible to sing here today at his 90th birthday celebration. I feel so honoured, I just can't begin to explain.'

Sugababes

Bringing glamour to the stage: Sugababes (L-R Heidi Range, Keisha Buchanan, Amelle Berrabah) perform their no.1 hit Push The Button

Other acts to perform included scantily-clad pop trio Sugababes, who sang their number one hit Push The Button and About You Now after being introduced by racing driver Lewis Hamilton, who happily posed backstage with his new girlfriend, Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Annie Lennox gave a powerful speech about an African orphan she had met whose mother had died of AIDS, before singing an acapella with the Children of Agape choir.

Directing her speech at Mandela, she said: 'We must do something to prevent a virtual genocide upon your people.'

Will Smith also quoted Peter Gabriel, saying: 'If the world could only have one father, the man that we would choose to be our father would be Nelson Mandela.'

As a frail Mandela arrived on stage halfway through the concert, the celebrities and crowd burst into a rendition of Happy Birthday.

Mandela gave a brief speech, urging people to act in the fight against poverty and AIDS in Africa.

He said: 'Many years ago there was a historic concert which called for our freedom. Your voices carried across the water and inspired us in our prison cells far away.

'Tonight we can stand before you, free. We are honoured to be back in London for this wonderful occasion, celebration. But even as we celebrate, let us remind ourselves that our work is far from complete.

'Where there is poverty and sickness including Aids, where human beings are being oppressed, there is more work to be done. Our work is for freedom for all.'

Queen Mandela

Rocking out: Queen (L-R - Paul Rodgers and Brian May, flanked by Roger Taylor on drums) sang five tracks, including We Are The Champions, as the last act of the night

As well as live acts, videos of various celebrities including Gordon Ramsay, Katie Melua, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Henry, Morgan Freeman, Estelle and Susan Sarandon, wishing happy birthday to Mandela were broadcast to the crowd.

A celebratory message from Victoria Beckham was greeted by boos from the audience.

Following the Spice Girl's message, presenter June Sarpong said: 'Charming... I won't tell Victoria Beckham what you guys said. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

'I'm glad my message didn't come up. I don't know what you would have done.'

One of the final acts to take to the stage were rockers Queen and their new frontman Paul Rodgers.

They sang a selection of hits during the lengthy set and were greeted with rapturous applause when they performed We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions.

In the VIP area, Prime Minister Gordon Brown joined Prince William's girlfriend Kate Middleton and Richard Branson's daughter Holly.

Speaking during ITV1's delayed broadcast of the concert, Brown said: 'He is simply an inspiration.

'You know when you go into a room and you meet Nelson Mandela you are in the presence of a great man - the greatest man of our generation, the leader who ended apartheid and the man whose faith in the future was such that he risked execution, prison, intimidation, violence to serve the cause that he believed in.'

Mandela – who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 – celebrates his 90th birthday on July 18th.

He arrived in the UK on Monday and met with the Prime Minister and had a private audience with the Queen.

His fundraising dinner on Wednesday night was attended by Bill Clinton, Gordon Brown, Oprah Winfrey, Robert De Niro, Will Smith, Uma Thurman and Bob Geldof.

The event raised more than £5million for good causes but hit the headlines after Mandela broke his silence over the political and humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe.

I must have been watching a different concert. In my opinion, Amy Winehouse looked washed out, spaced out and stoned.

I was outraged to see that ITV decided to show only BRITISH well known artists when it was a concert for Africa shame on them!
Why did they not show the great performance of Bebe cool, Emmanuel Jal and other brilliant African artists?
Shame on them! same all, same all.
