After a disastrous Wimbledon defeat, Maria Sharapova turned her hand to the fashion game in Paris yesterday.

The 21-year-old, who opted for 'menswear' shorts on the court last week, this time decided on a very feminine look for her appearance at a Valentino catwalk show.

She turned heads as she arrived at the Place Vendome in a glamorous coat, pencil skirt and towering heels before taking her front-row seat in anticipation of the show.

The tennis star chatted happily with actress American Camilla Belle before the show in a sign she was not dwelling on her recent loss on the court.

Sharapova, who was seeded third in the tournament, endured a straight-sets second-round beating from a player ranked 154th in the world, losing 6-2, 6-4 loss to Alla Kudryavtsev.

Afterwards, she said: 'I have had to deal with a lot of ups and downs in my life, on and off the court.'

All smiles: Maria sat front-row with actress Camilla Belle

'But the number one thing is not to be disappointed by that, or by losses, or by negative things, things here and there.

'You have to find a way to keep your head even though it's pretty tough.'

For her part, Russia's Kudryavtseva was obviously thrilled at her victory delivering a stinging verdict on her competitor - and her tuxedo-style outfit.

She said: 'It is very pleasant to beat Maria. I don't like her outfit.'

Maria knows it takes money to make money. She has better business sense than tennis sense.
