Fairy tale evening for junior Wimbledon star Laura, the belle of the Champions' Ball

Updated 12:07pm on 7 Jul 2008

It made winning Wimbledon seem like the easy part.

For although Laura Robson may have triumphed in the girls' singles, the toughest challenge of the tournament remained - choosing a dress for the Champions' Ball.

On Saturday, the 14-year-old became the first Briton to win the title since Annabel Croft in 1984.

But the task of picking the right gown was still to come.

Yesterday afternoon dresser Elizabeth Piner laid out 150 frocks in the changing rooms at Centre Court. And Laura was the first to pick.

As she'd worn white all tournament, as players must at the All England Club, Laura chose a short black dress for the ball.

Laura brought a touch of fairytale to her outfit with a pair of Wizard Of Oz-inspired, hot pink high heels.

A thrilled Laura clutched her trophy with pride as she posed beside boy's winner, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, 17, at the bash.

Winners' corner: This year's Wimbledon triumphs Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams

Laura, who lives in Wimbledon with her father Andrew, a Shell executive, and mother Kathy, a former basketball player, had harboured a desire to take Russian player Marat Safin as her date to the black-tie event, which brings together all the finalists, at the InterContinental Hotel, on Park Lane.

But Safin, who was beaten in the semi-final by Roger Federer, wrote her a letter telling her he was sorry, but he couldn't attend.

Asked whether the letter meant more to her than the trophy, Laura joked: 'The letter for sure.'

Britain's former number one, Tim Henman, believes Laura has the potential to go far.

'I look at her tennis game and it's been fantastic the way she plays,' he said.

'Then you hear her speak off the court and she's very self-assured and knows what she's on about.

'She looks like she's got some real potential.'

Britain's last adult Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade, who lifted the title in 1977, said: 'I'm really proud of her for what she did on Saturday, and I do think she's got what it takes.'

But like any teenager, Laura has plenty of responsibilities other than sport.

Although her world junior ranking could rise from 36th to fifth when the new order is announced today, Laura added: 'I've to keep my schoolwork in order and my mum says there's always room for that.'

Other guests at the Champions Ball included Wimbledon men's winner Rafael Nadal and women's winner Venus Williams.

While Rafael followed other male guests' in opting for a black tux, Venus opted for a floor-length purple gown and white jacket.

After watching Laura's game, Venus said: 'I think it is amazing what she has done. I am really rooting for her. I hope that she continues to develop.

'It's so important to develop your game during the stage in her career that she is at now. Winning is awesome but really developing your game is the vital point. I hope that she and everyone around her focus on that.'

Nice pix, But sarki comment on last pair - Cliff promised not to sing 'regularly' (it was a splendid 1-off) and Martina is scarcely 'retired' when she troubles to continue to entertain us with her play. Good on 'em both!
