It's fantastic to be a dad again at 59, says Status Quo's Rick Parfitt as he shows off his beautiful IVF twins

Updated 10:49am on 8 Jul 2008

He has enjoyed many a sleepless night in more than four decades of Rockin' All Over the World.

But Status Quo's Rick Parfitt can now expect to be kept up through the night for very different reasons.

The 59-year-old rocker has his hands full after his third wife Lyndsay Whitburn, 47, gave birth to twins Tommy Oswald and Lily Rose by Caesarean section in May.

They are pictured today for the first time.

The couple announced the pregnancy last year after conceiving through IVF.

And far from easing himself into a peaceful retirement, Parfitt insists he is prepared for the nappy changing and sleepless nights that lie ahead.

"Twenty years ago, the rock and roll lifestyle came first," he says defiantly. "I didn't think of it any other way. I was on the road with my band and that was my life really.

"I had these lovely kids, and I didn't see much of them. I was too preoccupied enjoying myself. Back then, there was no way I could have lived peacefully like this - it would have driven me mad.

"I've had my heart bypass and suspected throat cancer but I've survived. I'm more together now than I've ever been. It's unbelievably fantastic to be a dad again."

Beauty salon owner Lyndsay and guitarist Rick, who already has two sons Harry, 19 and Richard, 33 from previous marriages, met two years ago in a local gym when Rick was battling depression.

The pair married months later after a whirlwind romance, despite Parfitt insisting he would never tie the knot again following two costly divorces.

His first was to Marietta Boeker, with whom he had a daughter, Heidi, who drowned in the couple's swimming pool in 1980. He later divorced childhood sweetheart Patty.

He said: "I never thought this would happen to me at nearly 60 - that I would meet, fall in love, marry the girl of my dreams and then have two more beautiful children.

"I knew happiness was out there. I just couldn't seem to find it. It's almost as if I've started life again."

Parfitt is currently on a tour of Europe with Status Quo. He joined the band in 1968 and alongside frontman Francis Rossi has sold more than 118 million records.
