After wrapping up a £50million divorce, Greg Norman seems keen to save the pennies.

The golfer used his famous charm to persuade a young female police officer not to fine him £60 for using a mobile phone while driving his Range Rover.

Norman, 53, was on his way to the Open at Royal Birkdale yesterday when he was pulled over by police in Southport.

The Australian - nicknamed the Great White Shark - escaped punishment by claiming he did not fully understand British driving laws.

The former world number one tried to hide his face as he was given a stern talking to for 30 minutes on Saxon Road, Southport.

Norman should consider himself lucky - his let-off comes a day after judges were told to crackdown on drivers who use mobile phones at the wheel and that those who kill while doing so should be jailed for at least two years.

Onlooker Steve Grimshaw was stunned that Greg managed to speed off in his black 4x4 with nothing more than a warning.

Steve, 29 said: 'Greg looked embarrassed as hell when the police pulled him over.

'I heard him telling the officer he didn't understand the law about speaking on a mobile and that he was on his way to the Open.

'His charm must have worked as the officer let him off with a warning.

'He drove off smiling and waving.'
