More money?: David Tennant is said to be signing a £1.5million deal to continue to playing the Time Lord in Doctor Who

David Tennant is close to signing a £1.5million deal to remain as Doctor Who.

The actor's future as the Doctor has been the subject of speculation for months as it was feared he would quit after four years in the role.

But it is hoped the 37-year-old star will remain for his fourth series after filming four specials to be broadcast over the next year.

BBC bosses are set to offer Tennant, a massive deal to encourage him to stay on when the sci-fi show returns for a full series in 2010.

Writer Russell T Davies will be replaced by Steven Moffatt - the man behind some of the series' scariest episodes.

An insider told The Sun: 'It will be a new team and David has to meet everyone.

'But we're gearing up to offer him a massive deal.

'He’s interested. Everyone thought he was going, but it’s not as open and shut as that.'

Doctor Who has become the biggest earner for BBC Worldwide.

The finale of the last series drew nearly 10m viewers.

Tennant was named as the new Time Lord in 2005 after the previous Doctor Christopher Ecclestone decided to step down after just one series.

Currently, Tennant is currently in rehearsals for the lead role of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet at Stratford-Upon-Avon, which opens next week.
