A return to Beatlemania as Macca fans storm through the concert gates

Updated 22:58pm on 21 Jul 2008

When he was one of the Fab Four, it was an almost daily occurrence for Paul McCartney.

Screaming girls would mob the Beatles wherever they went - at airports, concert halls and even Buckingham Palace when they arrived to receive their MBEs from the Queen.

And it was just like old times when 66-year-old Sir Paul gave a free outdoor concert to mark the city of Quebec's 400th birthday.

A return to Beatle mania: Thousands of fans storm through the concert grounds yesterday in Quebec City to see Sir Paul McCartney perform in a free concert

As the gates opened, a crowd estimated at 200,000 burst through intent on gaining a good vantage point.

The fact that most of them were born after the Beatles broke up failed to curb their enthusiasm - especially when Macca spoke to them in halting French.

The concert was part of the city's 400th anniversary celebrations.

It's not just on stage where McCartney is moving on with his life following his acrimonious split with Heather Mills.

He was accompanied to the Canadian city by girlfriend Nancy Shevell, 47, fuelling rumours that their love affair is becoming increasingly serious.

The couple were first pictured in a passionate embrace in the front of his car last November and more recently were spotted again frolicking in the sea and enjoying romantic walks on the beach whilst on holiday together in the Caribbean.

The concert yesterday comes just 24 hours after a rousing performance in New York alongside fellow legendary crooner Billy Joel.

Despite a combined age of 125, McCartney and Billy Joel show the younger generation of rockers how it's done

Showing the younger generation how it's done, the rockers, who have a combined aged of 125, dazzled the 63,000 screaming fans at Queens' Shea Stadium.

At one point, clearly enjoying the celebration, McCartney gave host Joel, 59, a good old-fashioned smacker on the cheek.

Other stars at the concert included Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler, who looked particularly well preserved, and Tony Bennett.
