To millions of film fans around the world, the name Rupert Grint is synonymous with the wholesome entertainment of the Harry Potter franchise.

But the 19-year-old appears determined to avoid being typecast and has signed up to appear in a new coming-of-age drama which, judging by our picture, looks to be a gritty, violent affair.

Rupert is currently filming Cherry Bomb in Belfast alongside James Nesbitt, Kimberley Nixon and Robert Sheehan.

Transformation: Rupert Grint is covered in blood in new film Cherry Bomb (l), a far cry from his usual chirpy image (r)

In the upcoming BBC film, Rupert and Robert's characters vie for the affection of Kimberley's Michelle, whose father is played by James Nesbitt.

Rupert is best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies.

The next film in the hugely successful series, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, is due to be released in November.
