Guilty: Pete Doherty plead guilty to charges of criminal damages after breaking a photographer's camera lens

Troubled musician Pete Doherty has been ordered to pay £918.27 compensation to a photographer and £100 in costs after he pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage.

The former drug addict pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage to the camera at Yeovil Magistrates Court today.

Doherty smashed a photographer's camera on a day out with family before he had to return to rehab, a court heard today.

The Babyshambles frontman lost his temper with South West News Service photographer Catherine Mead when she followed him and then girlfriend, Irina Lazareanu around the Somerset town of Crewkerne last August.

The 29-year-old grabbed the camera and broke the lens after inviting Ms Mead and a colleague to introduce themselves.

Ms Mead was not seriously injured but damage was caused to her camera.

When the 28-year-old failed to show up to answer the charge at Yeovil Magistrates Court last week, a warrant was issued for his arrest.

At 11.03am, Doherty, arrived an hour late dressed in a black suit and brown hat, arrived at the court in a Toyota people carrier and was met by his solicitor.

The former drug addict battled through a crowd of photographers and fans to get into the building.

Prosecutor Sarah Rhodes told magistrates that Doherty was staying with relatives at a home in Tintinhull, Somerset.

She said photographers, including Ms Mead, congregated outside the house on August 22 last year, when the musician came outside to pose for shots.

Ms Rhodes said: 'He appeared to be in good spirits.'

Later in the day, Ms Mead visited Crewkerne after receiving a tip-off that Doherty was there. She found him outside a pub 'enjoying a pint'.

Ms Rhodes said: 'She (Mead) didn't have the photo she wanted so she continued to follow the defendant.

'He said to her - in a calm manner - "why have you been following me around all day, why don't you come and introduce yourselves?".

Ms Mead continued to take photographs and at this stage Doherty, standing less than two feet away, started to 'become aggressive'.

Ms Rhodes said he grabbed the camera and damaged the lens.

Doherty was arrested by Metropolitan Police on December 3 and fully admitted damaging the camera, Ms Rhodes said.

She went on: 'He told police he was trying to enjoy a day with his family before he went into rehab.'
