Hollywood hunk Matthew McConaughey proved his naked bongo-playing days are well and truly behind him when he took his newborn son out on a family stroll.

The 38-year-old actor is pictured for the first time out with his new son, embarking on possibly the most challenging role of his life: fatherhood.

McConnaughey and his 24-year-old Brazilian model girlfriend Camila Alves welcomed little Levi Alves McConaughey into the world on Los Angeles on July 7, weighing in at 7lb, 4oz.

Every inch the doting dad, McConaughey carried a tub of baby accessories while girlfriend Camila pushed the new addition in a pram to visit friends in Malibu.

He then pitched a tent to protect mother and baby from the sun while he surfed.

It's been a decade since the native Texan was famously arrested after playing the bongos in the nude while allegedly under the influence of marijuana.

Voted the sexiest man alive in People magazine in 2005, McConnaughey has starred in films such as The Wedding Planner, Sahara and A Time To Kill.

He has dated a string of Hollywood beauties - including Sandra Bullock and Penelope Cruz - but has settled down with long-term girlfriend Camila.

McConnaughey said previously that he had been preparing for fatherhood since the the age of ten.

"Bringing a baby into the world is something I've always wanted and now I'm completely ready for my life to start revolving around another human being," he said.

"I carefully maintain relationships and friendships. I'm committed to my acting career. But to be the architect of a little creature's life is my next big adventure and I can't wait for it to begin."
