The wild past that George W. Bush has tried to put behind him has been immortalised on the big screen in the upcoming film W.

Controversial director Oliver Stone's biopic on the U.S. President is set to open just a month before the U.S. elections.

In W, Josh Brolin plays the president from a young man, who disappoints his father, former president George Bush with his hard-partying antics and his shaky career path.

U.S. President George W. Bush is played by Josh Brolin

The film's trailer, which was released online this week, depicts Dubya's transformation from a reckless party animal to the most powerful man in the world.

It features clips of his wild parties in college, a fight with his father and his purported arrest for attempting to tear down the goalposts at an American football game.

Stone's film also broaches Dubya's 1976 arrest for drink driving in Maine and rumours that Bush Snr used his influence to attain a place for his son at Harvard Business School.

First Lady Laura Bush is played by Elizabeth Banks

Using hair and make-up, Brolin is a convincing lookalike of Bush, while Spider-Man III actress Elizabeth Banks dons pearl earrings and dark lipstick to play First Lady Laura Bush.

Amongst the stellar cast in the upcoming movie are British stars Thandie Newton and Ioan Gruffudd.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is played by Thandie Newton

Fantastic Four star Gruffudd is a smooth-talking Tony Blair, while Newton is a startlingly convincing Secretary Of State Condoleezza Rice.

Meanwhile Ellen Burstyn and James Cromwell play Dubya's parents, Barbara Bush and George Bush Snr.

Before filming commenced in Louisiana, U.S. earlier this year, Stone has promised to be honest to the story of how Bush, 61, transformed from "an alcoholic bum" to resident of the White House.

In an interview with Hollywood trade magazine Daily Variety, Stone said: 'It's a behind-the-scenes approach, similar to Nixon, to give a sense of what it's like to be in his skin.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair is playing by Ioan Gruffudd

'But if Nixon was a symphony, this is more like a chamber piece, and not as dark in tone. People have turned my political ideas into a cliché, but that is superficial.

'Here, I'm the referee, and I want a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world?

'It's like Frank Capra territory on one hand, but I'll also cover the demons in his private life, his bouts with his dad and his conversion to Christianity, which explains a lot of where he is coming from.

Dubya's mother, former First Lady Barbara Bush is played by Ellen Burstyn

'It includes his belief that God personally chose him to be president of the United States, and his coming into his own with the stunning, pre-emptive attack on Iraq. It will contain surprises for Bush supporters and his detractors.'

Bush has admitted he abused alcohol up until he 40, but has denied he was an alcoholic.

During his 2000 presidential campaign, he said he decided to quit drinking after waking up with a hangover of his 40th birthday.

Former U.S. President George Bush Snr is played by James Cromwell

He said: 'I quit drinking in 1986 and haven't had a drop since then.'

In one scene, Bush as a college student drunkly refutes assumptions he will follow his father's political ambitions, saying: 'Hell no, that's the last thing in the world I'd want to do'

In another scene, Bush criticises his father as 'Mr. Perfect. Mr. War Hero. Mr F****** God Almighty,' when Bush Snr urges him to cut down on his drinking.

Stone will portray Bush's pursuit of war in Iraq as revenge on fallen dictator Saddam Hussein for his assassination attempt on his father.
