Ailing Paul Newman looks more frail than ever as he is pushed around in a wheelchair

Updated 01:43am on 1 Aug 2008

The piercing blue eyes are invisible behind sunglasses and the baseball cap is pulled firmly down.

The thin and frail figure in the wheelchair is Paul Newman, and his appearance will prompt further fears over his health.

The 83-year-old Hollywood icon is understood to be having treatment for cancer.

Frail: Paul Newman looked a shadow of his former self during a recent outing in New York

He was pictured being pushed from New York's Weill Cornell Miedical Centre, which specialises in cancer treatment and is affiliated with the respected Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in the same city.

The Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid star has so far declined to comment on his condition apart from to say he is 'doing nicely'.

Concern was first raised in June when he looked gaunt at a fund-raising event for his children's charity The Hole In The Wall Gang.

Fight: The actor has apparently been battling the unnamed cancer since last year

After speculation that the former chain smoker had lung cancer, his friend A E Hotchner said he had been fighting a 'form of cancer' for 18 months, although he later said he had been misquoted.

Newman retired from acting in 2006 after an acclaimed 50-year career that included Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Cool Hand Luke.

Leave the poor man alone. A very dignified man that should have his privacy respected. Yes he was out in public but how many of you parasites were there to photograph him? I would be very interested to see if this is printed as it attacks the photographer and reporter of this piece.
