David Beckham has acquired a few new friends during his year in LA  including Tom Cruise and Will Smith, and now he's got another high profile pal to add to the list.

The football star has teamed up with Elmo for a guest appearance on the hugely popular children's programme Sesame Street.

The LA Galaxy star was invited to appear on the first episode of its 39th season alongside a host of other celebrities including Heidi Klum, Jenny McCarthy, Jack Black and Jessica Alba.

He he introduced the word 'persistent' to Elmo and viewers on the show's Word on the Street segment.

A source said: 'David has always been a huge fan of the show. When he was a kid he watched it, like a lot of people, and knew all the characters. He was more than happy to go on.'

Child's play: Heid Klum and Jenny McCarthy also appear on the debut episode of the show's 39th season
