Unmasked: Bono ditches his trademark glasses for first time in years

New look: Bono minus specs

It's a sight for sore eyes as U2 frontman Bono steps out minus his trademark glasses.

The singer, who also donned a Che Guevara-style baseball cap, was relaxing on holiday with his family in the stylish Italian resort of Portofino when he decided to dispense with his famous look.

The 48-year-old rarely appears in public without the well-known rose-coloured specs, but for the first time in years he clearly felt he could kick back and forget his superstar image.

It was the Irishman's first chance to enjoy a break of his own, after playing host to a number of celebrities at his home in the South of France earlier in the week.

A range of famous faces including supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber partied at the star's exclusive villa in the small coastal village of Eze.

They were accompanied by Hollywood actor George Clooney.

Bono's place has become a popular haunt for celebrities in the area and both Brad Pitt and Robert De Niro recently took their families there.

The eyes have it: Bono is well-known for his stylish glasses

His image change left onlookers in Portofino to speculate whether the star had simply intentionally left his glasses at home to go 'au natural', or if he'd had some work done to his famous eyes.
