A spokesperson for Coronation Street told the newspaper: 'Alison and Adam are over the moon - they're thrilled and delighted.'

The actress first appeared on the soap in 2006 after starring in Sky One football series Dream Team. Since joining the show, Alison's character has been involved in some gripping storylines.

In June, cold factory boss Carla blackmailed brother-in-law Liam into selling his share of the factory by threatening to tell people about their one night stand.

Alison recently revealed that playing Carla was initially a challenge for her.

She said: 'I was uncomfortable playing a constant b**** at first. I'm getting into it now but I'm not as nasty or as cocky as Carla.

'She's horrible to anyone she perceives to be a rival. I couldn't be like that.'
