Tom Cruise was left red-faced last night when he was outdone by wife Katie Holmes at his own film premiere.

After two weeks apart, Katie dashed from theatre rehearsals in New York to be at Tom's side at the Los Angeles screening of Tropic Thunder.

Katie, who has spent the last few weeks dressed down in jeans and T-shirts as she rehearses for her upcoming Broadway debut, looked sleek and groomed in a multi-layered PVC top and dark blue satin pencil skirt, teamed with killer strappy heels.

Unfortunately, her 46-year-old husband hadn't made such an effort and arrived looking casual and wearing four different colours.

Standing next to his statuesque, glamorous wife, Tom was dwarfed in both height and the style stakes thanks to his laid-back outfit.

Tom appeared to be going for a combination of urban, smart and cosy due to his trendy black jeans, sleek grey suit jacket and purple v-neck sweater.

Despite the Minority Report star's fashion faux pas, he looked thrilled to be beside his wife again after one of the longest periods they have ever spent apart.

The former Dawson's Creek actress, 29, is expected to return to New York this week following her whirlwind visit to Los Angeles to resume rehearsals for All My Sons, which opens next month.

Meanwhile, his Tropic Thunder co-stars Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jnr also beat Tom in the fashion stakes in their smart suits.

The screening of Tropic Thunder proved to be a night for couples with Jack bringing his wife Tanya and Ben - who also directed the film - bringing his actress wife Christine Taylor, who has a small role in the movie.

Also in attendance was new father Matthew McConaughey, who tore himself away from newborn baby son Levi and model girlfriend Camilla Alves to be at the screening.
