Is it Phil Collins or Steptoe and daughter?

Updated 10:01am on 26 Aug 2008

With his musical activities on hold and a series of hugely expensive divorces behind him, Phil Collins might be thinking of resuming his acting career.

If so, he'd be a natural for a remake of Steptoe and Son.

The 57- year- old star's appearance at his daughter's wedding provoked comparisons to Wilfred Brambell's character Albert Steptoe in the classic BBC sitcom about father-and-son rag-and-bone men.

Balding Collins did not bother to shave off his grey stubble for the ceremony at a hotel in the Netherlands.

But he managed to dress up smartly to give away Joely, whom he adopted after marrying her mother, his Canadian first wife Andrea Bertorelli.

Joely, 33, a successful actress in Canada, married Dutch fiancé Stefan Buitelaarhe in Leiden.

Collins, whose third marriage to Orianne Cevey was revealed last week to have taken a £25million chunk out of his £140million fortune, was accompanied by his girlfriend, American newsreader Dana Taylor.

The couple started dating three months after he separated from Swiss-born Miss Cevey in 2006.

The wedding is thought to have been the first meeting between Miss Taylor and the mother of the bride.

Also among the family guests was Collins's son by Andrea, Simon, 28, and the singer's 95-year-old mother, June.

Collins, who made his acting debut as a child playing the Artful Dodger in a West End production of Oliver!, went on to become the drummer in Genesis and then carve out a successful solo career.

Returning to acting, he took the title role in the 1988 movie Buster, about the Great Train Robber Buster Edwards.

He contracted a viral infection in 2000, since when he has been plagued by a constant buzzing in his left ear, affecting his musical output including a planned production of Phil Collins: The Musical.
