Ricky Gervais has taken on a haunting new role in his first turn as a leading man in the upcoming romantic comedy, Ghost Town.

The 47-year-old plays dentist Bertram Pincus, who after a near-death experience finds he can see ghosts - who all annoy him with demands.

Haunting: The star 'sees dead people' in the new film

One spirit, played by Greg Kinnear, wants him to break up the engagement of his widow, played by Tea Leoni.

The role will come as a surprise to fans of The Office, according to Gervais.

'No-one would expect this from me - they look at me and see David Brent,' he said.

'It's a bit like those great old Hollywood movies. It reminds me of It's A Wonderful Life - it's very sweet.'
