Jacko at 50: From perky pop prince to pyjama-clad oddball, the fall and fall of a superstar

Updated 01:06am on 29 Aug 2008

He did his best to avoid growing up, just like his hero Peter Pan. But today Michael Jackson turns 50.

The faded star has reportedly refused all efforts to throw a party, and will spend the day with family.

This picture was taken a few days ago as he stepped out to Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas for dinner with his children Prince Michael, 11, Paris, ten, and Blanket, six.

His emaciated frame was clad in what has become his trademark ensemble - dark jacket, pyjama bottoms and loafers.

He wore sunglasses but not the usual mask, offering a rare glimpse of his much-altered face.

Although Jackson's obsession with plastic surgery led to ridicule, his career came to a halt only after allegations of child abuse in 2003.

He was cleared of the charges after the case went to trial, but became a recluse afterwards and his debts soared.

Earlier this year, he sold his fantasy Neverland ranch, but was left more than £20million in debt.

It is understood that Jackson is in talks with venues in Las Vegas to land a residency, which will help pay off some of the money he owes.

There is still huge demand for his early music - when his 1982 album Thriller was re-released on its 25th anniversary, it reached number two in the U.S. and number three here.

To commemorate his 50th birthday, a CD called King of Pop is being released worldwide.

It is a compilation of Jackson's best 18 songs, as chosen by fans on the internet.

Michael Jackson's a strong person, he always bounces back. Michael Jackson isn't in debt those are just stupid rumors, as he till owns 50% of Sony/ATV and 100% of MiJac Music publishing companies that earn him millions each year. Michael Jackson is taking time out of his career that spanned from 1969-2001, which is 32yrs and he deserves a break so don't write him off.

At the age of 50, Michael should concentrate mainly on his health and personal appearances. Hire a private physical fitness trainer, eat right, live your life to the fullest. If you want to remain a private person, then do so. It is your right. But take care of yourself, you are here on this earth for a reason. You must remember you have children that look up to you and many fans that still believe in you.

I think it would be really hard for him to make a come back (which I'm all for) but it would never match the success of thriller. It would be a shame if THE Michael Jackson has to resort to playing in Vegas just to pay off his debts.
Is it just me or is the picture of him when he was 20 got pale white patches on his skin? I'm starting to believe he's vitiligo story.

I do agree with Laura from London. Plastic surgeons took advantage of him. That's what the devil will do to us every time once we let him. Michael should have used his talent to bring honour amd glory to the God. It's not too late. His parents are surely going to be held responsible in part for the damage to his soul.

The truth of the matter is these people have more money than brains, and none of them know what to do with it, only make themselves look hideous.

He has so much money they allow him to dine in his Pyjama's at Planet Hollywood!

He looks ridiculous.

What a shame and I never got to see him live in concert - I doubt I ever will! The closest I got was Thriller, a show all about him and The Jacksons - amazing though! The surgeons who continued with all that surgery on him should be sued!
