Updated 11:03am on 29 Aug 2008

Singer Neil Diamond has stunned the music industry after offering a refund to fans who attended his latest concert after he performed with a raspy voice.

Following his below par performance in Columbus, Ohio on Monday, Diamond was diagnosed with acute laryngitis and was forced to cancel two further gigs.

Many fans who attended the gig at Ohio State University were so disappointed they actually left the concert.

Following the gig, the 67-year-old published an apology on his website for 'letting his fans down'.

He said: ' Please give me a few days to figure out a way to make it up to you.

'I haven't let you down before and I wont let you down now.'

He then adapted the lyrics from his 1972 single Play Me; 'Until you hear from me again remember, You are the sun, I am the moon. You are the words. I am the tune. Forgive me. I love you.'

Diamond postponed Wednesday's concert in Green Bay, Wisconsin and tonight's gig in St. Louis, Missouri to give him time to recover from his illness.

Tickets for Monday's gig cost between £10 to £60 and refunds will be available for anyone who applies.

Diamond has been enjoying a surge of popularity this year after a career that's spanned five decades.

In June, Diamond headlined the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset.
