Beckham gets his necklaces in a twist with New Age 'chanting' beads

Updated 00:14am on 31 Aug 2008

When he moved to Los Angeles, David Beckham vowed he would never ‘go Hollywood’.

But barely a year after the soccer icon arrived in America, he seems to have forgotten that pledge by embracing New Age ‘spiritual jewellery’ that promises wearers abundant love, success and good health if they simply ‘chant’ their desires.

The 33-year-old England star has been seen wearing necklaces made by Energy Muse, a company that has built a following among the rich and famous in Hollywood with its ‘chakra-changing’ gemstones and ‘healing’ crystals.

Beckham has even stamped his own style on the trend by wearing the necklaces, which range in price from £25 to £275, around his wrist.

The company – which markets its jewellery under the slogan ‘we help you obtain that missing peace in life’ – admitted last night: ‘We couldn’t be more delighted.

The line has been popular with stars from Britney Spears to Courtney Love, but since David has been spotted in them, sales have shot up.’

The LA Galaxy midfielder – who moved to the States last summer after completing a £128million transfer from Real Madrid – was most recently photographed wearing three of the necklaces around his left wrist at the opening of Gordon Ramsay’s eponymous restaurant on LA’s famed Sunset Strip.

Energy Muse – founded in California by former estate agent Heather Askinosie and designer Timmi Jandro – supplies its jewellery with a scroll urging the wearer to chant a daily declaration.

Those choosing the £50 Protection Necklace are advised to repeat: ‘I call forth divine protection.’

Company spokesman Carolynn LaRocca said the necklaces would ‘open Beckham’s chakras’ – energy lines important in Chinese alternative therapies. When a person is ill or depressed, their chakras are said to be ‘blocked’.

The necklaces have been worn by stars such as supermodel Heidi Klum, Sex And The City actress Kristin Davis and Britney Spears, who chose one called High Priestess.
