Another Saturday night saw another roster of starry-eyed 'singers' try to touch viewers hearts as they sang, and in some cases shrieked, from Glasgow.

The city - which last year delivered us the series' fourth winner, Leon Jackson - played host to another collection of eccentrics and the occasional flash of talent.

From housewife Suzanne Gay, who compared herself to Whitney Houston before launching into the wrong song - twice - to checkout assistant Jamie Roberts's energetic but ultimately misguided dancemoves, the fourth round of auditions provided millions of viewers with a dozen laughs and a round of putdowns from the judges.

Mrs Gay found herself sent out the door with a withering: 'I think even if you'd started right it would still have been wrong', from Simon Cowell, while Jamie managed to avoid the insults by rendering the judges speechless.

Meanwhile Dannii Minogue told girl-duo 3's a Crowd they were 'one of the weirdest thing's I've ever seen' and miner Stirling Sonata was rated: 'unbelievably bad'.

Auditionee Ashwin felt sure he had hit the right notes, but was quickly brought down to earth by Simon.

'There's a difference between being confident and deluded, and unfortunately you fall into the latter,' he explained. Ashwin perhaps proved the point when he stormed off with a final: 'You haven't heard the last of me.'

Meanwhile 81-year-old Peter Lee turned up thinking he was auditioning for Britain's Got Talent - and played the spoons to Singing In The Rain while telling the judges he wants to appear on the Royal Variety Show.

Simon not unfairly told him to return in six months.

Lyndsey and Lee Wearin, from Chesterfield, managed to embarrass the judges with their version of Celine Dion's It's All Coming Back To Me Now - which got steamy when they start kissing halfway through their performance.

However there were a few diamonds scattered throughout, including 17-year-old Joelle Moses, who again brought Whitney to the judges, with a rendition of 'I Have Nothing'.

'I wasn't expecting that,' Simon said, while Cheryl described her vocals as 'amazing'.

The story of the night belonged to Daviel Evans, who left tears in the eyes of Cheryl Cole and Dannii as he explained his wife Jacqueline had died from multiple organ failure while giving birth to daughter Ana-Marie.

39-year-old Daniel performed a moving version of Barry Manilow's Sometimes We Touch.

Asked where his inspiration was from, he said: 'It was the wish of my wife.

'Last year after giving birth to my beautiful baby girl she passed away and I realised life is too short so I decided to go for it. At least I can say I tried.

'Jacqueline had always been my biggest fan - we always watched X Factor at our home in Spain and every year she said, "You should enter that", but it was never the right time.

'But if the last year has taught me anything it’s to live life to the full. When I sang I knew she was in there with me. She’s always there beside me.'

Cheryl Cole told him: 'I can see why your wife wanted you to audition. I think she’d be very proud.'

Last night would have been the couple's fifth wedding anniversary, and with a powerful voice and a touching sob-story , he is sure to be successful when we revisit him in Boot Camp.
