More than 1,000 hysterical teenage girls turned out to see their idols, The Jonas Brothers, at the premiere of their film Camp Rock in London on Wednesday evening.

Although most music lovers over the age of 20 would struggle to recognise them, the American teen pop sensation caused mayhem on the red carpet at the Royal Festival Hall.

Amid chaotic scenes, a sea of girls - mainly still in their school uniforms - wailed out their names, burst into tears and some even collapsed, overcome by emotion.

On more than one occasion, a fight broke out between groups of teenagers scrapping to get their hands on posters erected around the red carpet to publicise the red carpet event.

The brothers are already a multi-million dollar hit in the US and their clean-cut brand of pop is now proving a massive hit over here.

New Jersey-born Kevin, 20, Joe, 19, and Nick, 15, are signed to Hollywood Records, which is owned by Disney.

The brothers star in and provide the soundtrack to the film company’s latest movie, Camp Rock.

Their clean-cut style is sure to win them fans among parents as well as millions of screaming teens.

Their father, Kevin Jonas, is a former pastor and the evangelical Christian siblings all wear purity rings as a sign of their promise not to have sex before marriage.

In a contrast with other bands who rely on controversy and rebellion to make their name, the group doesn’t drink, smoke or even swear, but, despite their seeming lack of rock n’ roll credentials, they made it onto the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in July this year.

Their fans claim to look up to them as role models.

Amid chaotic scenes, girls wailed their names out, burst into tears and collapsed, overcome by emotion.

On more than one occasion, a fight broke out between groups of teenager girls scrapping to get their hands on posters erected around the red carpet to publicist the red carpet event.

'It was pandemonium - complete bedlam. It was lucky no one got really hurt' said one onlooker.

Having caught their breath, some of the teen fans spoke to the Mail.

Molly Cielinsky, 14, said: ‘I am totally obsessed with the Jonas brothers. Every day, I wake up and ask myself what would the Jonas Brothers would do.

‘I think they are really good role models and, because of them, lots of teens are vowing not to have sex before marriage.’

She admitted: ‘Most of the fans here are girls and we are all in love with these boys.’

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Halliwell, 16, said: ‘I’ve been a fan since they first became well known two years ago. They are so fit.

‘I think that British kids aren’t as impressed by the purity rings that they wear. I bet they don’t manage to carry the promise through anyway.

‘I don’t think that would matter in Britain as much as it would in America.’

Rose Gordon, 16, said: ‘We’ve all come straight from school and we won’t leave until we’ve seen them.

‘They’re so much better than other bands who take drugs and fall out of parties.’

The singers refused to be drawn on the issue of their celibacy.

Nick Jonas said: ‘We try not to make a big deal about it.’

The band’s second album with Hollywood Records, Jonas Brothers, sold 1.4 million copies.

Their latest, entitled A Little Big Longer, has sold more than one million copies so far.

The youngsters are reported to have earned £6 million in 2007 and gave 10 per cent of the earnings to their own charity, Change for the Children.

Camp Rock is a follow-up but not a sequel to the hugely popular high school musical franchise, which is also a Disney Channel TV movie.

It follows high school students who spend their summer holiday at a music camp.

In America, more than 24.5 million people flocked to see the opening weekend.

The film’s soundtrack debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 in the United States with 188,000 copies sold in the first week.

Despite their popularity, the Jonas Brothers are yet to find credibility in Britain.

They were lampooned onstage by comedian Russell Brand earlier this week at the MTV Video Awards for the promise to remain celibate until marriage.

Self-confessed sex addict Brand produced a mock promise ring onstage and claimed it had been given up by band member Nick.

He joked: ‘Nick was a bit reluctant at first, but, after a bit, he realised it was for the best.’

The audience of American teens was nonplussed and Brand was forced to apologise by American Idol winner and fellow purity winner, Jordin Sparks.

As he collected his award, Sparks said: ‘It’s not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut.’

Brand told viewers: ‘I didn’t mean to take it lightly. I love Jonas Brothers. I don’t want to piss off teenage fans.’
