But Madonna showed her age last night when she abandoned her husband’s 40th birthday party after just one hour.

The queen of pop, who is 10 years older than Guy Ritchie, was escorted from the Punch Bowl pub in Mayfair, which the couple own, at 10pm.

After his wife retreated home, Mr Ritchie returned to the high-spirited celebrations, which carried on until 4am.

Despite only staying for one hour, the fitness-obsessed singer looked unsteady on her feet as she made her way to the waiting car.

The evening started as a family affair, with the couple joined by their children, Lourdes, 12, Rocco, eight, and even adopted toddler, David Banda, who was in the care of a nanny.

The evening took off after Madonna left and her song-producer husband was joined by celebrity friends, Jamie Hince, David Guest and Sting’s wife, Trudi Styler.

The birthday boy seemed in high spirits and made faces for waiting photographers through the pub windows in the early hours.

A source close to Mr Ritchie said: ‘When the kids were there, it was quite civilised and Rocco was running around like a little madman. But, after Madonna took them home, it really took off.’

During the course of what became a very drunken evening, Guy raised a cheer from his friends - who he consistently referring to as 'The Firm' - by sinking pints of lager placed from the bar without using his hands, and simply gripping the glass between his teeth and spilling much of it down his front.

But is was the increasingly blue jokes he told at his wife's expense after she had left which drew the biggest cheers.

Making a slurred and innuendo-laden speech, Mr Ritchie told his band of revellers how Madonna had tried to buy him a horse for his birthday, adding: 'I told her I was too scared - and anyway, I like to leave the riding to her. Weyhey!' which was answered by whoops of appreciation.

Guy responded saying: 'I told her all I really want for my birthday is to s*** my missus' to further cheers of appreciation.

A responding jokey speech from one of Guy's associates was laden with hints about his sexuality being called in to question.

'The theme was how much of a girl Guy had turned into recently - constantly moisturising and using make-up on the orders of Madonna for all his recent press conferences to launch RocknRolla, his latest film. It was all testosterone-fuelled banter that was met with cheers all around,' said a friend.

'Guy was on great form. He kept going on about all the lads being together - all The Firm - as if they were in one of his gangster movies. They were slinging back beer with whisky chasers and very quickly got very drunk.

'After about two hours people were bouncing drunk off the walls. And when they ran out of steam, the guitars came out and they were singing old cockney tunes, very badly and out of tune, incidentally. It got very messy towards the end.'

His understated celebrations contrasted with the lavish party he organised last month for his wife’s 50th birthday. He spent £100,000 on food and drink alone at exclusive London club Volstead.

He also bought her a £250,000 Bulgari necklace and earrings and reportedly pledged to support Madonna’s desire to adopt another child.

The couple have gone to great lengths in recent months to prove their marriage is still strong amid reports of arguments over Madonna’s devotion to Kabbalah and her dedicated fitness regime.

After reports that the star had an affair with New York baseball player, Alex Rodriguez -- which were strenuously denied – Mr Ritchie flew to the city to put on a display of unity with his wife.
