Regal Anne Hathaway breaks her silence on betrayal by fraudster ex-boyfriend

Updated 02:54am on 11 Sep 2008

Actress Anne Hathaway has broken her silence on the shock arrest of her former boyfriend, and revealed that it was her strong work ethic that kept her going.

Looking regal and elegant in a new photoshoot for W magazine, the 25-year-old spoke about the shock of her ex-boyfriend's arrest on multiple fraud charges.

While others might prefer to lick their wounds, the Devil Wears Prada actress has retreated into her work, honouring her commitments, despite the news that ex-love Raffaello Follieri is facing a four-year stretch behind bars after admitting 14 counts of fraud.

Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri allegedly obtained £3  million while pretending to be the Vatican's chief money man.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur - who was dumped by the  Hollywood beauty before being arrested earlier this year  - created a  real-estate investment scam and then frittered away the cash on a jet-set lifestyle.

In an candid interview Anne told US fashion bible W magazine: 'Right now I don’t have the wherewithal to be anything except professional.

'As soon as I found out about the arrest, I had to get on a plane to Mexico to do a press tour for Get Smart.

'And then I spent a week in shock at a friend’s house. And then I had to go back and do more press, and I haven’t stopped since.'

The level headed star who shot to fame in Disney film The Princess Diaries added:

'At different stages of my life, I’ve felt I’ve been two ages simultaneously. I’d be a professional working adult and also a typical 13-year-old.

'Right now I have the distinct feeling that I’m two ages again, and the older part of me that I relied on many times in the past in difficult moments, that’s the part that got me here today.

'That’s the part that says, ‘You do your job, you keep your head up.’”

W features the stunning actress in their latest issue

Anne has been staying with friends since being forced to move out of the Manhattan apartment she shared with Follieri, which was searched by the police.

So now in the middle of a promotional tour, the homeless actress is tasked with finding a place to live.

Anne said: 'It’s a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden.

'But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me. One said, "Go stay at my house."

She's also received support for Get Smart co-star and star of the US version of The Office, Steve Carell.

'Anne said: He said, "At some point you’re going to have to talk about this time in your life. You don’t have to do it this week. I’ll take care of anything that comes your way."

But it seems like the young actress is ready to face anyway that comes her way.

The full interview can be seen in the latest issue of W magazine or at www.wmagazine.com
