Comedy giants Rowan Atkinson and Robin Williams are to return to the British stage after long absences for a televised gala to celebrate Prince Charles's 60th birthday.

Mr Bean and Blackadder star Atkinson, who will be seen as Fagin in Oliver! in December, last went on a live tour in 1991.

Oscar-winning American actor Williams has not done stand-up in Britain for 25 years.

Amusing company: Robin Williams and Rowan Atkinson star in the gala

The pair will be at the New Wimbledon Theatre to raise funds for Charles's charity The Prince's Trust with a show called We Are Most Amused.

John Cleese has promised to perform an " extra special" skit for Charles and his wife Camilla.

The show will be filmed on 12 November, two days before Charles turns 60, and screened on ITV1 during that week.

The comedy gala is part of a week-long celebration to mark Charles's birthday.

The Queen will host a concert and banquet at Buckingham Palace on 13 November while Camilla is organising a dinner and dancing for 75 guests two days later at the couple's country residence, Highgrove in Gloucestershire.

Palace staff hit back at criticism over the cost of the two parties.

One aide said: "Charles is a bit grumpy about turning 60 and was reluctant to have such high-profile celebrations, but we pointed out that it would be expected he mark the day, irrespective of his wishes."

•Tickets for We Are Most Amused go on sale at 10.30am tomorrow and cost between £25 and £100. Call 0870 0606646.

We trust costs of both hosting and policing the party will be borne by either Charles or HM?
