Sergeant ‘just reads paper’ says Arlene

Updated 12:13pm on 17 Nov 2008

Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips today said John Sergeant was more interested in reading the paper than practising his dance moves.

Shocking news: John Sergeant with partner Kristina Rihanoff on the BBC show

Phillips claims the ex-BBC journalist, 64, is not taking the competition seriously enough. She told BBC Breakfast the celebrities put in “hours in the practice studio” adding: “I know I am sure with John he sits and reads The Guardian.

“A lot of time he and his dance partner spend fooling around. I hope this does not go on to the final.” She and her fellow judges, who labelled him a “dancing pig in Cuban heels”, were stunned last night when the public kept Sergeant in the BBC show and Cherie Lunghi was given the boot.

TOUGH CHEESE Arlene and co!,....You get paid a lot of money to sit and wax lyrical about an activity that you yourself never excelled at professionally and so why have a go at John Sargeant?....Unlike you,...at least he's entertaining, intelligent and kind!
