Britney: It's my party... and I'll mime if I want to

Updated 12:23pm on 3 Dec 2008

Britney Spears celebrated her 27th birthday by performing in New York - if you call miming "performing".

The star ruffled a few feathers on The X Factor on Saturday when she mimed, and yesterday she courted yet more controversy with another display of lip-synching.

Happy birthday: Britney has her cake but doesn't eat it

This is supposed to be Brit's great comeback, but so far she has yet to sing a note.

She was presented with a huge birthday cake during the performance on ABC's Good Morning America, which she was gracious enough to accept.

It was a slap in the face for the organisers of the G-A-Y club night, who had a cake made for Britney - she was supposed to accept it on stage at Heaven nightclub on Saturday night. But she left them fuming after a farcical cameo, in which she refused to leave the VIP area or say a word to the audience.

Brit's out: Miss Spears on a birthday night out at Tenjune in New York

Last night Britters showed even more front - almost falling out her dress as she topped off her birthday with a trip to New York club Tenjune.

Tickets for her new world tour go on sale on Friday, with Britney playing London's O2 Arena in June. Let's hope she's found her singing voice by then...

So she mimed big woops..... we all know she can sing and she is doing a comback after all she has been through i think ppl should be a little more forgiving if she wants to do things a little at a time! for all yoou's saying she wouldn't leave the VIP area so what it was her birthday im sure i would be the same having a quiet drink on my OWN......

She's only doing what almost every other "artist" does now. There are barely any of these so-called singers who could hold a note on their own.

everyone knows its very difficult to perform very high moving dance routine and sing live at the same time, even with the likes of Britney, Madonna, Xtina etc etc. this girl is trying to re-build her confidence, just by performing, albeit miming, in front of an audience. Give her a break, I've seen Britney live and heard her sing live and she can sing. Maybe she is taking it one step at a time, rather than trying to run before she can walk. What would you rather watch, her, or Amy Winehouse staggering around looking like a drug fuelled mess falling out of clubs etc etc. Give the girl some space and let her rebuild her career!

This is all about the marketing - she has no talent, does not write her own music and as we see here doesn't even sing! her "music" is robotic and tedious.....this is an example of how our society is stooping to the lowest common denominator....

Some people obviously prefer the 'challenged' Britney. Why all the cry for blood. Totally agree with you Keith. Give the girl a break...she only just got 'back'

Our favourite artistes mimed on Top of the Pops for years and we never batted an eyelid so give the girl a break!
