Coleen Rooney's brother was detained over the nightclub brawl which resulted in England footballer Steven Gerrard being charged.

A 19-year-old arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident was named by the Daily Mirror as Anthony McLoughlin, 19. Merseyside Police said last night a 19-year-old man from Huyton had been bailed pending further inquiries.

Gerrard, 28, was charged with two others after a fight at the Lounge Inn, in Southport, Merseyside, in the early hours of 29 December. McLoughlin's father Tony, 49, told the newspaper that his son had “not done anything”, adding: “Everything is all right, he is out, he is all right.”

Gerrard was celebrating his team's win over Newcastle when the trouble began. He was arrested and interviewed by detectives who later charged the international, who was made an MBE in the last New Year Honours.

It is claimed the Liverpool player assaulted part-time DJ Marcus McGee, 34. Mr McGee, of Southport, allegedly lost a tooth and needed stitches to a face cut. In the hours after the fracas, blood and broken glass were visible on the floor of the club.

Gerrard, of Formby, Merseyside, will appear before magistrates on 23 January with John Doran, 29, and Ian Gerard Smith, 19, both of Huyton. They are also facing counts of assault and affray. Merseyside police said: “The 19-year-old male from Huyton who was earlier arrested on suspicion of assault following the incident at the Lounge Inn, Southport in the early hours of December 29 has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”
