The 40-year-old Friends actress split from the musician, 32, after returning to the US following a promotion run for her latest film, Marley & Me, in Britain.
Friends say she has made it clear that she ended the relationship rather than him, as he had reportedly claimed. The pair had been dating for a year and appeared smitten. At the Oscars last month Aniston was overheard whispering to Mayer how much she loved him. But after the event, he is said to have "gone cold", leaving her feeling "angry and used" and prompting her to call it a day.
A friend said: "It's humiliating. to say her feelings are hurt is an understatement."
The couple have split up before but got back together. Aniston said in a recent interview that it was "hoping too much" to have a relationship that lasted forever.
