Winslet tells of torment over 'Blubber' taunts

Updated 13:32pm on 29 Apr 2009

Kate Winslet says she still doesn't consider herself to be beautiful after she was bullied at school for being chubby.

Class victim: Kate Winslet

The Oscar-winning actress, 33, blasted the girls who nicknamed her "Blubber," saying: "Where are they now?" She told Marie Claire magazine that although she is happy with her body now, she needs help to look good for the cameras. "Even now I do not consider myself to be some kind of great, sexy beauty," she said. "Absolutely not."

And she said it was important for young women to know that many stars are retouched or spend hours in make-up.

She said: "With the nudity in The Reader, for example, even I was like, 'Damn, I look good'. And that was the lighting - it was a bit of body make-up. I don't believe in pretending those things don't go on." Winslet also hit out at people's assumption she is middle-class because of her speaking voice. She said her parents were working-class, jobbing actors who sent her to a theatre school with the help of a charitable grant.

She described how she was raised with three siblings in a small terrace house and as a child only had 10p a week pocket money.
