Arrested Ledley King's bar blitz in Maya

Updated 12:09pm on 11 May 2009

Ledley King and his teammates had been on a £10,000 boozing spree before he allegedly attacked a nightclub bouncer. A number of Tottenham stars had been at Maya nightclub on Saturday night, where they racked up a huge bill on magnums of champagne.

Arrested: Ledley King on his night out in Soho on Saturday, which led to an alleged assault

The Spurs club captain was questioned on suspicion of assault on another man in Soho during the early hours of Sunday, and has been bailed until mid-July.

He has since apologised for the alleged fracas, saying in a statement: "I sincerely regret that a night out with friends went too far.

"I have apologised to [my manager] Harry [Redknapp] and I fully appreciate that, as a professional footballer, I have a duty to behave in a responsible manner.

"I am assisting the police with their inquiries. Anyone who knows me, knows that much of what has been suggested is totally out of character."

Earlier on Saturday night, Ledley, 28, was with teammates including Jermaine Jenas, Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon at Mogue Entertainment's Funky Scholarz night at Soho club Maya.

A source said: "They were clearly having a big night. Every half an hour or so they would order another round of champagne. The lights were dimmed and special music was played and bottles or magnums of champagne were delivered covered in sparklers. They were surrounded by stunning girls."

Later, Ledley went to nearby Punk nightclub, where he is alleged to have assaulted doorman Waheed Butt.

The bouncer told BBC radio he had refused Ledley entry to the club, and added: "He said, 'I'm a rich guy, I've got nothing to lose, I'm a big star. You, you're nothing on your £10-an-hour job', and stuff like that."

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman said: "The club is aware of an incident involving Ledley King in the early hours of Sunday morning. We await details and information and it would be inappropriate to make any fur the r comment at this time."
