Lily Allen hits out at Susan Boyle's talent
Updated 09:15am on 26 May 2009Lily Allen has blasted Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle, calling her “so over-rated.”
The singer hit out at the Scottish spinster whose performance on the ITV1 talent show helped to draw in almost 14 million viewers.
Allen said: “I thought her timing was off on Sunday - no control, and I don't think she has an amazing voice.”
In the message on Twitter she added that she thought 12-year-old Shaheen Jarfagholi was more talented than the Scots spinster.
She said: “She can sing, but it's not about talent with her, is it? She seems like a lovely lady but, if the show is about talent, then that Shaheen kid should win.”
Boyle, 48, nicknamed the Hairy Angel, got off to a rocky start on Sunday when she performed Memory from Cats - but recovered later, winning her place in the final this weekend.
She said after the show that she had started badly because she had a cold.
She added: “I said to myself, Well, you'd better just pick yourself up and keep going'...the audience reaction was really stunning.”
Allen also had some words to say about Boyle's fellow contestant, 10-year-old Natalie Okri, who was axed from the show on Sunday.
She said it was “verging on child cruelty” after the little girl burst into tears on live TV.
Last night's show saw north London dance group Flawless win their way into the grand final. The group, the last to perform in last night's second semi-final, performed a high-energy routine, dressed in military outfits, to the theme tune from the A-Team.
Following the success of their audition, in which they danced to Beggin' by Madcon, the boys were roundly praised last night.
Judge Cowell said: We've seen some utter junk tonight and that was utter genius.'
Tonight, in the third semi-final, the acts will include Riverdance father and son act Demetrios Demetriou and 12-year-old Michalakis, Devon farmer dancers The Barrow Boys, sibling ballroom dancers Ben and Becky Milan-Vega, dance troupe MD, flower arranging act Helena Leonard and Ian Lloyd, “saxaphone” singer Kayode Oresanya, singing duo Harmony and 12-year-old Shaheen.

I think Lily Allen is wrong about Susan Boyle, she is not over-rated in my opinion she is very good, I wonder if Lily could sing some of those songs as well as Susan, I heard Susan on youtube singing Cry me a river and she sang it with great pathos. People who keep knocking Susan should get a life maybe the green eyed monster is at work there somewhere.

You're all idiots! At no point did lily Allen say that Susan Boyle doesn't have talent, & she did not compare herself to Susan Boyle. Susan Boyle was hit by fame very quickly! This has made her appear overrated. Grow a brain!

Ah Lily ... such nice hair you have. Pity about your own lack of any talent at all. No good songs and no singing talent. As for Susan Boyle, she does have talent. That's the difference.

"Overrated" and quote "I thought her timing was off, no control, and I don't think she has an amazing voice, yes, she can sing, but it's not about talent with her is it? " ...Yes Lily, but what about Susan Boyle?

You can't be serious. The one memory I will have of this renditiun was Susan going out of tune and completely losing tempo. Rugging her tummy just confirmed that she was way out of her depth. Shaheen by contradt was sensational

Lily Allen so far so good, can you stand the test of time?.
The general public like Susan, just like some who buy your C.Ds., or D.V.Ds and always remember this young Lady, NEVER BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU, because it will bite you back?.
By the way .... Lily who ?.

Finally we have someone who is prepared to say that Susan Boyle is at best an above average singer. It appears that the Boyle phenomenan has more to do with the way she looks and her personality than her talent. Shaheen Jarfagholi is a great singer period. Even more remarkable is the fact that he has that voice at just 12 years old. I'm sure people have voted for Shaheen because of his age but he has the talent to back it up. Well done Lily!

I am sorry for Lili Allen, but in my opinion Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote MEMORY with Susan Boyle voice in mind.
I compared Susan version of Memory with Elaine Page version and I preferred Susan's.
Try to listen at both performances without looking at the singers themselves. Susan is a winner.
All my support to Susan Boyle.

When Lily Allen grows up and proves she can sing then is the time for her to making harsh criticism of someone she is obviously jealous of. The only way she can get noticed is by appearing worse for wear coming out of nightclubs.

I was as suprised as everyone else when I heard Ms Boyle sing. She has a wonderfull voice. She has been given a chance and I hope that it works out for her. Would Miss Allen be where she is today without her father's connections and money? Who knows? She was given a chance as well. However, I would much prefer to hear songs that my children can listen to, without containing explicit lyrics.

The music business isn't necessarily about talent either.
Ms Allen's success has been founded on her parents' showbiz backgrounds and contacts. Good luck to Susan Boyle, who has not had the benefit of either...

I completely agree with lily allen, susan boyles performance was not great in the semi final. It was better in the auditions, and we all got a shock because we all judge her by her appearance. But in reality now, there are much much better performances in BGT, hence flawess, diversity, shaheen...and many more. I will be upset if she won, seeing she already is living the dream and two people would vote for her due to sympathy and popularity rather than talent. DIVERSITY/ FLAWLESS to win!

I don't really have an opinion on Lily Allen and normally wouldn't comment on her rantings. BUT, I have to agree on this one. Susan Boyle can sing sure and very well but she's not brilliant and certainly not the most talented on the show. I think if she wasn't so frumpy and fairly ok looking there wouldn't be such hype about her. This is the ultimate sob story. Frumpy lady sings. If she wins then the show isn't truly about talent.

Scotty, I won't go into how NOT naive I am about the music industry and its inner workings, but I do tend to only comment when I some have facts to back them up. Lily was working on her music career from her early teens, so what, 6/7 years before she burst onto the scene in 2006 (a result of her going against her label and uploading demos to her myspace instead of waiting for the fully produced tracks). She had a deal fall through before that and labels turning her down for years, Keith didn't/couldn't fix that. She had to persevere the same way any non-manufactured artist does, and its very hard work, until you've tried and succeeded I don't think you can comment?
(And again, she hasn't said anything particularly bad here anyway so all the nasty comments about her on here just another outlet for very unhappy people I guess.)

This is precisely why parents should think twice before putting their children into these things. I dont like Diversity much but they were better than Natalie. Susan Boyle may not be the best singer in the world but she can give the other contestants a run for their money.

Most overnight sensations are usually 70% hype and 30% true talent. If Susan Boyle had performed 2 years ago and Paul Potts this year, we'd have seen exactly the same media reaction to Paul Potts this year as we have done with Susan and virtually the same with Susan then as we did with Paul Potts at the time; the main difference being how the media is now more closely attuned to any new talent developments, ready to over-react to anyone who looks worthy of getting noticed. The unreal media coverage of Susan Boyle, and I do like her voice, has spoilt the natural progress of the show and would have better waited until the final, before making her a star. Who else in their right mind would wish to endure the trauma of becoming an overnight star? Now, instead of becoming famous gradually, Susan has to try to live up to unrealistic expectation and may well find it hard not to disappoint any newly discovered fans. Even the Beatles didn't make it this easily! Does anyone remember how Mary Hopkin just faded away?

I don't know who Lily Allen is: can't say I've ever heard of her. But I do know who Susan Boyle is and even if she had a cold on Sunday night she is still a massive inspiration to so many people across the world. She's more than just a singer: she's a character with whom many people can identify - ordinary, been put down because of her looks. Yet, behind that facade lay an unfulfilled dream as with many people and we want to see her have a dream. I believe that the boy Shaheen has been singing on the stage and has already been given an opportunity in the industry so he is on his way anyway. Susan hadn't until now and it needed this show and the world wide interest to give her a lift when others wouldn't. And she's given us a lift by taking our mind off these horrendous economic and political times for a moment. Good on you Susan: you came onto the scene at just the right moment.

"Lily Allen, only famous because of her daddy" - erm, how many people in Lily's target audience actually knew who Keith Allen was? I genuinely had no idea who he was and I'm 25, I'd actually say her fame actually boosted his as he's now on Robin Hood. You contradict yourself but saying her 'daddy' spouted his mouth too often, but then claim he's a 'media darling', make your mind up! She's not even saying anything controversial, she's pointing out the facts, Susan Boyle has a great underdog story to tell, but she is not the world's best singer as proven by her wobbly rendition of Memory, and the moment Natalie Okri didn't get through I was screaming at the tv for someone to give the poor little thing a hug.
Plus, J.M, if Lily Allen takes a good long look in the mirror I'm sure she'll be pretty happy with the reflection she sees and go about her day.

I thought Susan Boyle's performance (both the actual song and her behaviour after she got through) was truly dreadful and cringeworthy but nobody else seemed to mind or notice that the song was too big for her voice. I really felt for her during her rendition and figured she must have been very nervous but she certainly didn't seem it afterwards and I thought she wasn't very modest at all. In fact, I think all the attention has gone to her head. Still, I wish her all the best and I definitely thinks she deserves another go to showcase her voice without the restrictions of a cold or nerves.

Allen is also advised by her PR agency that spouting-off nonsense like this in the press gets you noticed. Sad.
