Davina McCall's big battle over power bill

Updated 16:01pm on 10 Jun 2009

TV presenter Davina McCall threatened legal action against an energy supplier unless it cut her electricity bill in half.

The Big Brother host accused EDF of not checking her meter for seven years after she was landed with a bill for £35,000.

The firm had based estimates of her usage on a three-bedroom semi, although she was living with her family in a £1.75m mansion in Surrey at the time.

McCall, 41, who earns an estimated £1.25m a year hosting Big Brother, threatened to take EDF to court and the battle lasted for a year before they agreed to knock £20,000 off the bill.

EDF would not comment, but an insider said: “They decided they'd rather accept £15,000 instead of paying for a court case.

It's a kick in the teeth for the average consumer and seems very unfair.”

A spokeswoman for McCall said: “The issue has been resolved.”
