Updated 08:50am on 26 Jun 2009

Michael Jackson, one of pop music's biggest stars with lifetime sales estimated at 750 million records, died on Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital where he had been rushed in full cardiac arrest after collapsing at his home. He was 50.

RIP Michael Jackson

Facing a battered reputation and a mountain of debts, Jackson had spent the last two months rehearsing for a long-awaited series of comeback concerts in London in July.

Fans have flooded websites to express their grief at the death of Jackson.

ElToroDiablo posted on gossip website TMZ.com: "God bless you Michael, heaven just got another beautiful angel."

Kimbers wrote: "What a sad day. I hope Michael Jackson finds the peace that eluded him in life."

Another fan, Sineen, wrote on website MJSite.com: "I never thought that one day would come and i'll have to write this down, Michael Jackson is no longer with us. May your warm soul rest in peace. I'll always love you Michael. Keep the faith!"

Rulintheroost posted on political website The Huffington Post: "RIP Michael. Your music was a joy to many people around the world."

Fans continue to arrive outside the hospital.

Love you Michael. Your music was my growing from a child to an adult and now nearly a pensioner. I loved you in Jacksons Five to Off the wall and from then onwards. What an inspiration you have been to the world. Showing your love through your music and reachin out to the rich and the poor the sick and the healthly the black and the white. The bad and the good.
May you sing with the angels and rock their world like you have ours.

Be at peace now out of harms way and remember those that loved you for your compassion and music to the souls.

RIP xxxx
