It's back, and it looks as if it's brought along the usual tears, tantrums and heartache.

Difficult decisions: Cheryl Cole shows the strain

The X Factor boot camp took to the stage at the Hammersmith Apollo yesterday and continued until 10.30pm, by which time the judges had whittled down the numbers of talent contest wannabes to their satisfaction.

Tears and sympathy: Holly hugs a weeping contestant

Holly Willoughby, 28, who presents the show's spin-off, The Xtra Factor, was left to console some of the unlucky ones outside the theatre. Wearing a badge which read: “I'm Holly and I'm here to help,” she hugged contestants and handed out tissues to wipe away their tears.

X-it: Holly Willoughby heads home after a long day at boot camp

It looked like the day's emotions had also worn down big-hearted judge Cheryl Cole, who seemed tired as she left in her car at the end of the day. The show kicks off on ITV at the end of the summer.
