Gorillas helped Stephen Fry shed five stone

Updated 12:50pm on 1 Sep 2009

Stephen Fry has told how how filming his new BBC wildlife series helped inspire his five-stone weight loss - when he spied gorillas eyeing-up his "man boobs" with jealousy.

The 52-year-old travelled the globe to seek out six of the most endangered species, including the kakapo parrot in New Zealand and the manatee in the Brazilian Amazon.

The series, titled Last Chance To See, is being screened on BBC2.

"I started off a great deal fatter than I am now," the QI and Kingdom star told the TV Times.

"I really did suffer on the long marches we did up hills. I'd lose my temper with myself as I was streaming with sweat and unable to move while everyone else was fine.

"But I'm very grateful that the experience made me take myself in hand and get in shape.

"I was fed up with having man boobs. I could see silverback gorillas looking at me with envy and thinking 'How do I get moobs like that?"'
