Daniel Craig's opening night on Broadway in A Steady Rain went down a storm as he revealed he would like to take the play to London.

Broadway star: Daniel Craig, seen here with Hugh Jackman, was a hit with the American audience

The James Bond star, appearing with X-Men actor Hugh Jackman, received rave reviews for his performance as hard-drinking Italian-American cop Joey in Keith Huff's two-hander police drama.

A star-studded crowd at Manhattan's Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, including Matthew Broderick, Jerry Seinfeld and Whoopi Goldberg, greeted the pair's appearance with cheers.

There have been murmurings that A Steady Rain will be coming to London after it finishes its run in December and at the aftershow party, Craig, 41, told the Standard: “I really don't know. I'd like to. We'll see.”

The play, which chronicles the fallout between two Chicago cops, is Craig's Broadway debut. He said: “It just grabbed me – I read it and felt compelled to get involved.”

New York critics gushed over his performance. Newsday's Linda Winer hailed him “a genuine discovery for Broadway”, while Hollywood trade publication Variety declared: “Completely disappearing inside his character, Craig is superb.”

Earlier this week, A Steady Rain broke the box-office record for a non-musical on Broadway, grossing $1.17 million (£729,000).

Footage of Jackman confronting a persistent mobile phone offender during the play has become a viral phenomenon on the internet.
